Galileo and the Advent and Balance of Modern Science
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the Italian mathematician, physicist, and
astronomer Galilei Galileo as presented by Stillman Drake in his 1957 classic “Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo.” Galileo was an important component if not the most important component of the
intellectual avalanche of ideas and hypotheses that began in the 16th century. It is essential that modern historians understand where “the balance” of science occurred and at what point its “marked change” took place. In addition, a short explanation is included regarding the differences between the winter and summer Solstice. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Garland's "Daily Life Of The Ancient Greeks"
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. As a professor of the classics and an author of multiple books and articles on ancient Greek culture, Robert Garland is a most qualified person to write this book. Even with such extensive literary and academic experience, however, he does not allow it to cloud or skew his perspective; rather, he merely shares the information in a way that is both neutral and captivating. His critical use of resources spans the ages by including such classics as Homer's Greek mythology, historical documentation (primary) and incorporating the work of other authors who have published works on a particular aspect of Greek culture (secondary). George Hourani's "Arab Seafaring"
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The vastness of George Hourani's "Arab Seafaring" explores well beyond the standardized version of sea trade history and its eventual impact upon the world; rather, this particular historic rendering takes myriad other elements into account when describing one of the most important episodes in commerce. While the author does, indeed, address the fundamental aspects of sea trade history as it relates to the time before Christ, the Arabs, the Indian Ocean and ultimately to China and East Africa, one might readily argue that the much more interesting components of Hourani's account stem from his detailed descriptions of other heretofore undisclosed content, such as travel particulars, geographic interests, meteorology and highly illustrative visual images of the very vessels that made these seafaring journeys over and over again. Also integral to the overall comprehensiveness of Hourani's book is the impact of lighthouses, maritime handbooks and other invaluable guiding instruments, as well as that of piracy and everyday sea life upon the sailors. Unquestionably, Arab Seafaring is one of the most exhaustive accounts of its kind that paints a complete and detailed literary picture of what it meant to be involved with seafaring commerce during these centuries. Gladstone and Chamberlain

Joseph Chamberlain and William Gladstone had many opposing views which came to a head over the Home Rule vote in 1886. This 16 page paper looks at the diverse views of these two men, with Gladstone advocating dissemination of the imperial colonies into self governing entities and Chamberlain advocating imperial protectionism and emancipation. However, despite these two different political views on empire and imperialism it can also be argued that the politicians had similar goals, it was only the way these goals were achieved that differed. Glorious Revolution
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper that examines the bloodless revolt of 1688-89, referred to as the "Glorious Revolution," the competing political factions of the country, the Whigs and the Tories, united to dispose James II and in favor his daughter Mary and her husband, William, Stadtholder of the Netherlands. While this extraordinary chain of events may seem out of context with the century of stability and security that followed, it really was not. As William B. Willcox, of Yale University, has pointed out, it was James II who was the revolutionary and not the insurrectionists. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Governing Institutions, Political And Cultural Life, Economic Infrastructure Characteristic Of Sultanates In India Between The 13th Century And The Coming Of The Mughals In 1526
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. When one examines India's historical perspective, it is often with significant consideration that the Sultanate period is credited with perpetuating change that had already begun to take place. Expanding agriculture, widespread commercial systems, slow but sure changes based upon growing technological advancements, as well as political and religious growth all played an integral role in the impact left by the Turkish/Afghan regime. According to Barbara and Thomas Metcalf, authors of A Concise History of India, these changes could not have taken place had India been what many thought to be a "stagnant society" (Metcalf et al 3), but rather could only have occurred in an ever-growing, ever-progressive civilization. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

1802, Thomas Bruce, the seventh Earl of Elgin, known as Lord Elgin, secured
permission to remove what the sultan called some pieces of stone with
inscriptions or figures from the temple of idols at the Parthenon, in Athens,
Greece. Ever since gaining independence in 1812, Greece has demanded the
return of the marbles. They are national treasures. Does Greece have a right
to demand their return? This paper is a close examination of the arguments on
both sides that can perhaps give more insight to these and other questions.

Herodotus: Reliable And Comprehensive Account Of The Persian Wars?
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Much like the repelling nature of oil and water, the concepts of fact and philosophy travel parallel paths that rarely - if ever - cross. This explains the reason why Herodotus's account of the Persian Wars is considered unreliable and imprecise, inasmuch as his perspective was based solely upon a chronicling of times, dates, facts, personal reports and other factually-based resources in order to compile his conviction about the Persian Wars. Herodotus fervently believed factual details were the only components worthy of categorizing with regard to the wars' comprehensive nature, noting quite unequivocally in his skeptical approach how there was no room for theoretical fluff when addressing history. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

History as a Discipline
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page examination of history as a discipline. The author points out that the job of the historian is accomplished using specific tools and methodologies that allow as accurate as possible interpretation of history. It is not uncommon, however, to find that each new generation of historians has the tendency to rewrite some aspects of history. Sometimes this rewriting process results in a more accurate accounting, an accounting made possible by new developments and understandings in the discipline, but sometimes it results in what is termed "revisionist history", an accounting that is tilted to accomplish a specific goal or agenda. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
