Henry Sidgwick’s Arguments and Theories of Utilitarianism and Egoism: Morality, Sanctions, Reasoning and Common Sense
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Sidgwick’s “The Methods of Ethics” as he examines the morality behind the arguments of the Utilitarianism and the Egoist philosophies. In Henry Sidgwick’s “The Methods of Ethics”, he examines the morality behind the arguments of the Utilitarianism and the Egoist philosophies. In doing so, Sidgwick finds that the morality of common sense is outlined by its adherence to certain principles of consensus in a society and which seem to be consistent throughout history and societies. The morality of common sense is consistent with that of utilitarianism in that moral good is measured by the greatest good for the greatest number. Sidgwick finds however that the utilitarianism argument fails against that of the egoist who finds that an action which brings each man’s happiness is the basis for man’s morality. In order to “prove” his argument, the utilitarian imposes sanctions on the egoist which in a sense state that there are pleasures and pains which will be expected if an egoist acts only in his own self interests. These sanctions however, do not offer “proof” for the egoist as for him, his own happiness is by definition only good, not only for him but also from a universal perspective. Bibliography lists 1 source.

What happens when I say, "I understand"? Understanding is most relevant to hermeneutics when it takes live experience -- the event of understanding -- as its starting point. Language, the involvement of another human horizon and the act of historical penetration are all interconnected in the notion of hermeneutics as an interdisciplinary crossroads for significant thought. The writer discusses hermeneutics as it relates to children. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Hobbes, Knowledge And The Constitution
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Challenging universal truth of any given entity that can be construed as knowledge formulates the basis upon which Hobbes' argument for falsifiability exists. Clearly, unfalsifiability stands as strong a conviction for the validity of a proclaimed piece of knowledge as lack of scientific proof stands against it. Should everyone become skeptics and empiricists, or are there other ways of knowing that cannot necessarily be empirically proven that are also valuable and necessary? Hobbes did not believe this to be so, inasmuch as knowledge cannot be unequivocally and universally true if the potential for proving the opposite is not considered part of the overall equation. Applying this theory to what Hobbes perceived as the 'best' constitution, one might readily agree to support his conclusions. Bibliography lists 1 source.

[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Through prolific writings on subjects including optics, philosophy and social theory, the "Hobbsean system" emerges as a coherent and comprehensive world view grounded in the distinct understanding of philosophy as physics. The world according to Hobbes is a world in which all spheres of activity are governed and explained through mechanical principles and where the primary task of philosophy is to understand the chain of cause and effect through which all phenomena emerge (Foutz ppg).Locke on the other hand, believes each human starts with a mental blank slate, and then adds to it through their knowledge and experience. How And Why Does 'Culture' Use 'Nature' To Represent Itself To Itself?
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Culture and nature are inextricably intertwined, which provides the reason behind the way in which culture uses nature to represent itself to itself. Mankind has developed a bad habit over recent years in separating himself from the world around him, namely nature and the environment. This individualist and selfish approach to one's existence is both myopic and faulty, speaking volumes about contemporary humanity's inability to appreciate the intrinsic relationship every entity – living or otherwise – has with all other life. Ancient cultures fully understood and accepted this truth and duly worshipped those spiritual entities that resided within such living and inanimate objects as animals, trees, streams, and every other aspect of nature. Even though many populations still look upon the relationship between culture and nature as a synergistic force in their existence, mankind of today does not truly realize the intimate association these two entities have with each other. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

How Does A Particular Intentional Mental State, Such As A Belief Or A Desire, Come To Have Its Particular Content?
[ send me this paper ]
To conjure a concept is to bring about thought; however, the question as to where and how that thought originated continues to be a critical debate within philosophical circles. Is mankind merely a pawn in a grander, more extensive interplay of intentional mental states like beliefs or desires that exist only because of external influences, or do people truly harbor an internal, ethereal knowledge that serves as the foundation of content? If externalist theories of content are true, it seems as if a person could be wrong about what he or she comes to believe. However, such theories and methods used to pose the externalist threat to self knowledge, along with responses to them that claim self-knowledge and externalism are compatible, may well provide a better understanding of how the argument for internalism has just as much influence - if not more - within the quest for a convincing conjecture. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
