Emotivism vs Subjectivism
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page philosophical essay. In determining the value of methods, it is necessary to examine just what they are and the potential value of each. It is also necessary to examine their shortcomings in order to be aware of them, and perhaps even lead to the conclusion that specific methods may actually be worth only the exercise of evaluating them, rather than being of value for arriving at sound, logical conclusions or proofs. Such would seem to be the case with both emotivism and subjectivism. Both are based on premises outside of hard, logical facts, and so it is difficult to quantify any conclusion that has been determined through the use of either emotivism or subjectivism. One cited source.

Empiricism vs. Nativism - Does Innate Knowledge Exist?
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page paper discussing whether knowledge is innate, as held by Plato, Descartes and Kant, or whether empiricists such as John Locke are more correct in their views of the origin of knowledge. The old arguments of the classic philosophers are more difficult to support in today's society and technological innovation, and it is language that is most widely discussed as having innate connections. Chomsky fell from favor in the 1980s, but linguistic nativism has been revived in recent years. Linguistic nativism cannot explain behavior such as a mother preparing for a first child, but varying "if-then" considerations lead to the conclusion that empiricism and nativism can coexist on a continuum, with neither being fully acceptable on its own merits. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Empiricism: The Only Truly Scientific Basis For Sociological Research
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages. Empiricism, which is defined as understanding through experience and interaction, has been a long-challenged concept when it comes to it being the only truly scientific basis for sociological research. Enlightenment's Effect on Theology
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper discussing the role of the Enlightenment and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant in the shaping of modern theology. Kant observed, "If we are asked, 'Do we now live in an enlightened age?' the answer is, 'No, but we do live in an age of enlightenment.'" Kant provided a framework within which individuals are able to hold to faith in God and grow in autonomy and personal responsibility while yet relying on God to direct their lives. Pre-Enlightenment theology kept the individual from the throne in the same way that the curtain separated individuals from the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle. The Enlightenment – aided by Kant's philosophy – tore away the curtain that men had replaced long after Jesus' death. Modern theology can make the way clear, but it is still left to individuals to choose to travel the path. Bibliography lists 15 sources in 25 footnotes.

Epicurean Ethics

A 5 page paper discussing the Epicurean view of good and evil (i.e., pleasure and pain) and the part that knowledge plays in bringing the happiness that should be the goal of every individual. Epicurus (342-270 B.C.) maintained that the pursuit of pleasure was not that which could be procured through physical enjoyments, but rather through contemplation. Epicurus' Observation
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Death, an entity greatly feared and misunderstood by humankind, is the representation of the end of life. Epicurus, however, took a decidedly different approach to one's mortality, postulating that death – in all its ominous form – is truly nothing to one's existence. Indeed, death does represent the end of a particular period of time where one inhabits one's mortal body, yet according to Epicurus it also represents rebirth and a time for rejuvenation. The connection that exists between life and death is often viewed as quite segmented, with one having little to do with the other. Epicurus was determined to bridge this ever-widening gap by demonstrating how death is not only a significant and very important part of life, but that it in no way detracts from one's time spent as a mortal being. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Ernst Cassirer: Language & Myth (1946)
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Philosophers are always asking themselves questions. What a philosopher is trying to do, is figure out the way in which people understand the world, or their sense and place of reality in the world. The German philosopher, Ernst Cassirer (1874- 1945) felt that we use mentally created symbols to understand our current reality. It was Cassirer's idea that scientific laws, theories of religion and the unique qualities of a given language were all symbols, which we as humans create to facilitate understanding the world. The logic of understanding then is to give some sense of order in the chaos of the world that we face on a daily basis.
