St. Thomas Aquinas: Vague Definition Of Common Good, Justice And Virtue
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. St. Thomas Aquinas espoused his propensity towards good will, justice and virtue as being the primary components of one's journey on this earth. He cited myriad reasons why this is to be so, as well as postulated that those who do not follow such a patch of righteousness were not living up to their full spiritual potential. However, there exists debate as to whether or not the philosopher's vague definitions of common good, justice and virtue were nothing more than loopholes for his argument. What, then, did Aquinas mean? Was he not earnest in his conjecture? Indeed he was, and it is with great significance that his theories contributed to the historical study of humankind. Mill, on the other hand, offers concrete suggestions on how to implement his philosophical outlook on representation; and, therefore, offers the more convincing argument.

Private Arms Possession And Community
[ send me this paper ]
The debate over the right to bear arms and the need in American society to control guns and violence has reached an apogee since the incident at Littleton, Colorado, High School. The view of Thomas Hobbes, in Leviathan, shows a world where man will fight to the death all those not himself. In order to protect and defend life, man must come together in a new definition of 'self'. To organize into community is to distribute power and to make a commitment to a stated set of rules. This 10 page paper argues that Hobbes' philosophy can be aligned against that of Kant, who set the value of man within their schema of society. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

The Leviathan State of Nature
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay examining how Thomas Hobbes' state of nature is an 'inference from the passions' of human kind. When Hobbes discovered Euclid's methods of logic, he set about examining the need for and the inevitability of the existence of government using Euclid's methods. Hobbes began with three basic assumptions from which to build: (1) justice and morality were products of government, not innate qualities of man; (2) all human motivation springs either from the desire for personal pleasure or the fear of pain; and (3) while there are physical and mental differences between individuals, those differences pale in connection with membership in a group. Under the last assumption, anyone was capable of overpowering any other one at any time. Hobbes concluded that in a state of nature, life would be every man against every man.

Was Socrates Truly 'Guilty' ?
[ send me this paper ]
In this 8 page critical paper, the writer debates the guilt or innocence of Socrates in terms relative to his society, his political realm and himself. The writer argues that by the definitions put forth by the Athenian democracy, Socrates was rightfully charged and convicted of the crimes of heresy and immorality. But it must be noted that in Socrates terms, terms that defined him as a political and social teacher, Socrates was not guilty of any crime and was unjustly tried. The writer cites sources from Plato to Taylor, in an attempt to debate both sides of this issue. In determining guilt or innocence, the author presents the argument that Socrates may not have faced a just jury trial. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
