Border Cinema
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper that examines how certain films, specifically those dealing with depictions of the Mexican/American border, determine how we feel concerning national identity. BP Fallon's Interview with U2: "One But Not The Same"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Sometimes the simplest questions are the most telling, as BP Fallon found out in his interview with the musical group U2. His article entitled "One But Not The Same" delves deep into the psyche of Bono, Edge, Larry and Adam, the four primary players who have made U2 a musical
icon. That Fallon steps away from traditional interview queries opens an entirely new aspect of information retrieval, inasmuch as celebrity personalities are often difficult to crack. This approach, however, remains simplistic in its structure yet reaches far within each man's personal realm. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Brecht/Epic Theatre & Mother Courage
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper/essay that analyzes Bertolt Brecht's play "Mother Courage and Her Children." This play addresses the senselessness of war and human depravity that results from totalitarianism; however, Brecht does this by using his own unique perspective and sense of theatre, rather than following the Aristotelian paradigm for tragedy, which had traditionally ruled theatrical productions. Rather than following the traditional theatrical paradigm in regards to tragedy, which engages the audience on an emotional level, Brecht endeavored to keep his audience outside of the action as observers, but to cause them to think about what was happening, its ramifications and social significance, which Brecht referred to as "epic" theatre. Brian Friel’s “Translations” -- A Drama of Cultural Ambivalence
[ send me this paper ]
This 12 page report discusses Irish playwright Brian Friel’s work
“Translations.” In it, he tells the story of the British to
dominate all of Irish culture and heritage by translating and
changing ancient Gaelic names of villages and towns into English.
Many drama critics, social commentators, and literary historians
have described it a “metaphor” or a parable of the struggles in
Northern Ireland regarding the British, cultural assimilation,
and the determination to maintain a separate and unique identity.
Friel demonstrates that the translation of language was no simple
exercise in words and the use of one language over another, it
was the beginning of an institutionalized encouragement of
cultural ambivalence that had become one of the means by which
the English were determined to eradicate uniquely Irish thinking.

present a number of fascinating correlations between white
admiration for black music (and culture) and how it related to
and still relates to racial inequalities. Bibliography lists 2

Buddies and Bad Guys -- African American Men in the Movies
[ send me this paper ]
This
15 page report discusses ten contemporary films and compares how
African American men are portrayed with various aspects of how
film historians and media scholars have described the historical
presentation of African American men in the movies, the popular
press, even images presented in and by society in general such as
advertising and news reporting. The easiest and most succinct
statement about African Americans in the early days of the movies
is simply that there were none. Society, at least cinematic
society, has accepted that the world has radically changed since
the days when a successful black actor was one who regularly had
parts as a servant, a sharecropper, or a faithful soldier. As
the world moves into the 21st century, it has become clear that
actors such as Denzel Washington, Will Smith, and Eddie Murphy
truly have star power and can almost guarantee a blockbuster.

[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. When comparing the cartoons produced by Warner Bros. and Disney studios in during the 1930s through 1960s golden age, the student will find one significant difference: the element of fantasy. Clearly, Walt Disney instilled such a sense of fantasy within all his cartoon creations that no other studio could come close to matching his intensity.
