The novel “Rain Man” was written by Leonore Fleischer and based on the screenplay by Bass and Morrow. Regardless of the source, the story involves the developing relationship between the central characters of brothers Charlie and Raymond. Charlie, a self-obsessed, materialistic car salesman who had long since abandoned a relationship with his father discovers that upon his father’s death the inheritance has been left to a brother he never realized he had, Raymond. Raymond, an autistic savant has been institutionalized since he was a child and considered a threat to the young Charlie. Charlie “kidnaps” Raymond from his institution and the remaining story is based on their growing acceptance and relationship as they drive across the country in six days. The development of both characters is unique but dependent on the growth of the other. Charlie becomes more sensitive to Raymond’s needs eventually realizing that he values the relationship with his brother more so than money. Like its literary predecessor, Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, on which the screenplay is loosely based, Coppola constructed the narrative of the film so that it demonstrates how identity is a social construct predicated on the reconstruction or remembrance of the past. Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca": Philosophical Theme
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. In humanity's quest to embrace the concept of Utopia, Niccol's treatment of the human condition would typically inspire one to envision a world where people live life in accordance with the rule of reason; however, the writer's intent was quite the opposite. Utilizing "Gattaca" as a metaphor for Utopia – meaning true human happiness – clearly displays the need for ethical humanism, inasmuch as it is not difficult to ascertain just how off track society has gone in its urgent quest to reap materialistic benefits and gain individual domination. The writer discusses that as one relates the consequences of a world without moral fortitude, one can also perceive the manner by which humanity has overstepped the boundaries that bring together ethical conscience and humanism. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
