12 Angry Men
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page film review. "12 Angry Men," in its original version, is set in the late 1950s. The principal focus of the film is the guilt or innocence of a defendant, a Latino adolescent, who is accused of killing his father and the prejudice of the 12, white, male jurors. However, an interesting issue of this film is the way in which the leadership of one man, the Architect, changes the way in which the jurors handle their responsibility. This issue is interesting because, first of all, the context of the plot shows how the knee-jerk, first reaction of the jurors is just go along with the prosecution, trusting that the State would not falsely accuse anyone, and rubber-stamp the boy as guilty. Secondly, the Architect is the only juror who takes his responsibility seriously, and third, by providing leadership, rather than coercion or argument, the Architect succeeds in changing the behavior of his fellow jurors. No additional sources cited.

12 Angry Men/Film Analysis
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper that analyzes the film 12 Angry Men from the perspective of how one juror's leadership influences the dynamics of jury considering a murder case. The writer discusses the leadership principles involved. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

12 Angry Men/TV's Law and Order
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page research paper/essay that discusses the defendant is seen in the film 12 Angry Men (1957, directed by Sidney Lumet) and in an episode of TV's Law and Order. In the film, the defendant is a young Puerto Rican teenager. The defendant is only briefly glimpsed at the beginning of the film, as the judge gives instructions to the jury who thenw adjourn to the jury room to deliberate. Consequently, the audience perceives the defendant solely through the perception that the juror have of him, which changes slowly over the course of the film. Similarly, in an episode of TV's Law and Order, the perception of attorneys McCoy and Borgia toward the primary suspect in a murder case slowly changes as new evidence emerges. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

At what might possibly be considered as opposed ends of the popular music spectrum are Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," which incorporates Caribbean rhythms into a song that expresses the frustration of marginalized people against the often arbitrary power of authority, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! from their 1943 musical. 28 Days Later/Film as Nightmare
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that analyzes the 2002 film 28 Days Later, Fox Searchlight Pictures, directed by Danny Doyle, written by Alex Garland and produced by Andrew Macdonald. The writer argues that this film is a nightmare of the first quality that expresses contemporary Western paranoia in regards to the idea that a new, possibly manufactured, plague could wipe out humanity. While this movie can be taken as a grim prediction of things to come, it can also be seen as an allegorical expression of the Cold War, which suggests a more fortuitous future if humanity manages to keep its head and negotiate, once again, the tricky line between vigilance and paranoia that eventually resulted in victory for the West. Bibliography lists 1 source.

A Beautiful Mind
[ send me this paper ]
20 pages in length. Director Ron Howard never backs away from a difficult storyline; to say he faced a tremendous challenge in making A Beautiful Mind as both accurate and educational is an understatement of grand proportions. Clearly, the film hit virtually every point pertaining to schizophrenia with sensitivity, realistic overtones and a message that left the audience better informed about this debilitating mental disorder. Examining it from a psychological perspective of diagnosis and influence (genetic, environmental or both) provides a significantly better understanding of how the film did an evenhanded portrayal of a disease that completely alters the protagonist's ability to function in society. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

A Comparison of Brigden’s “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” and the Movie “Elizabeth”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page comparison of Susan Brigden’s text “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” and the film “Elizabeth”. Susan Brigden’s text “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” gives a broad historical account of the Tudor era in England during its almost 120 year rule throughout the 15th to early 17th centuries. Brigden’s background knowledge on the Reformation in England at that time is effective but perhaps not properly displayed in her text as much of the religious and political detail was excluded in lieu of the inclusion of selections of poetry and prose from the era to provide the book with more depth and color. Overall, the effect was not well received by the critics who craved more historical detail. The film “Elizabeth” directed by Shekhar Kapur, on the other hand, provides a more in depth look at the political but somewhat more personal details of Elizabeth’s reign from 1558 until her death and the end of the Tudors in 1603. The images portrayed in the film show the often gritty side of the religious fervor which shook Tudor England outside of the political elite emphasized in Brigden’s book. Audiences must be aware however that artistic license may be more in effect in “Elizabeth” however than within Brigden’s historical text but taken together “New Worlds, Lost Worlds” provides a good background for the reign of Elizabeth brought to life in the film “Elizabeth”.
