Passage Criticism from Jean Rhys’ “Wide Sargasso Sea”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing elements of imagery and figurative language used throughout a passage in “Wide Sargasso Sea”. Jean Rhys uses vivid elements of imagery and figurative language to set the themes and tone throughout the novel “Wide Sargasso Sea”. In doing this, Rhys often shows oppositions within the environment in which certain characters must remain for the structure to remain consistent. A passage found on pages 65 and 66 (Penguin edition) relates Rochester leaving his structured world and getting lost in the forest to be later rescued by Baptiste. Within the forest, Rochester finds the forest to be dark and hostile as the bushes and branches grab at his legs. The only elements of civilization he finds are a road and a stone house which are overgrown and deserted. His relationship with Baptiste within the forest also differs with that outside of the forest. The passage overall contains many useful elements used throughout the novel which express the foreign aspects of the islands which are seen as dark, hostile and decayed from the colonial point of view.

Peru: Sterilization Versus Family Planning
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. There have been a number of benefits to come out of mandatory birth control in past history. In China, for example, not only has the nation's birth rate dropped significantly over the past decades, but its per capita income has experienced a monumental augmentation -- from 235 yuan back in the early 1970's to twenty-two hundred in 1995 -- that has yielded its people a much more advantageous existence. For Peru, the issue of overpopulation has come full circle to such an extreme that the nation's family planning organization thought it necessary to force sterilize myriad numbers of unwitting females; in many other cases, however, women were offered as much as fifty pounds of food for their consent. Is this practice one might consider unethical, or is it the only means by which a struggling society can even begin to come to grips with its massive overpopulation problem that family planning cannot control? Bibliography lists 15 sources.

Presentations of Colonialism
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay/research paper that discusses how colonialism is viewed in three different works. Presentations of colonialism in novels and film can differ remarkably in their focus and perspective, and, in so doing, each work shows a different facet of the complex experience of colonized peoples and how European domination served to radically alter their lives, both during the era of colonialism and for generations to come. For example, Jamaica Kincaid's non-fiction commentary on her island home Antigua describes the observable and lingering effects of colonialism on the lives and psyches of this island people. Chinua Achebe, on the other hand, fictionalizes his comments on colonialism in Nigeria in his classic novel Things Fall Apart. Similarly, director Roland Joffe addresses the topic of colonialism in a fictionalized account of historical events in his 1986 film The Mission. No additional sources cited.

Reaction To Colonizing And The Attempt To Conquer And Control Native Peoples
[ send me this paper ]
9 pages in length. The French ethnohistorian Nathan Wachtel has spoken of the "Vision of the Vanquished" in context of American Indians and their reaction to outsiders and the European attempt to conquer and control native peoples. The ways in which certain texts engage the question of native response to conquest and colonization mirror myriad populations that have had to endure similar subjugation. Historically, the degree of resistance, along with the challenge's effectiveness to outside authority, has not worked in the natives' favor, ultimately hastening a strong
dislike for those who choose to colonize on land that is already occupied by native peoples. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
