Mexican Film/Maria Candelaria
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page research paper/essay that discusses Emilio Fernandez’s Maria Candelaria (1943) and how this film relates to the task of addressing the legacy of colonialism within the context of Mexican history. Mexico, as Andrea Noble points out, is fundamentally a “mestizo entity,” that is, it is the product of “the colonial encounter between Indians, Spaniards (and Africans)” (Noble 81). As such, the Mexican culture struggles to understand its fundamental nature and to express the cultural dichotomies held within this paradigm. Mexican Immigration Into The United States: Conflict, Culture And Changing Roles
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Northern and southern California were cleanly split into two distinct divisions after the Mexicans had overtaken the state's colonization from the Spanish. With the substantial Chicano population to the south and the ever-growing Anglos society to the north, California was only steps away from being separated into two individual states. This did not happen, however, due in great part to the overwhelming influx of Anglos who cascaded throughout the state as a direct result of gold rush fever and the implementation of the transcontinental railroad. Once the Anglo populations began to soar throughout the southern region, Mexicans had little left to prevent a complete takeover. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

In the last three decades, for instance, there have been periods of significant growth only to be interrupted by five different economic collapses. The last collapse of the macroeconomy was 1994-1995. This crisis resulted in a $50 billion assistance program put together by the International Monetary Fund, and including a $20 billion loan from the United States. This paper traces the history of the Mexican macroeconomy since 1976. It provides a significant amount of data regarding balance of payments and gross domestic product. The writer explains the events leading up to the crash, the subsequent bailout program and the policy reforms adopted by the government. Negron-Muntaner/Barbie's Hair
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper that discusses this essay. A doll seems like an unlikely candidate for controversy. Yet, yet Frances Negron-Muntaner, in her essay "Barbie's Hair," describes how controversy immediately arose when the Mattel Toy Company released a Puerto Rican version of their famous Barbie doll in 1997. Communities, both in Puerto Rico and the mainland US, associated the doll with cultural connotations that involved "Puerto Rican identity" (Negron-Muntaner 39). The author of this provocative essay makes a number of pertinent points about this version of Barbie within the context of popular culture, however, two of the most intriguing points made in the essay are the significance that was attached to the meaning of the doll's hair and how this related to Puerto Rican identity and also how the doll represented a political position in terms of Puerto Rico's place on the world stage. Nicaraguan Influence on the United States
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page research paper that examines the relationship between these two counties. The writer argues that the history of Nicaragua and that of the United States has long been intertwined. The U.S. has felt that an interest in Nicaragua was crucial to its national interest and security since the middle of the nineteenth century. However, no relationship works in only one direction. Just as the United States has influenced the course of historical development in Nicaragua, this involvement has necessarily involved a Nicaraguan influence in U.S. culture. This influence has largely manifested itself in much the same way that U.S. involvement in Vietnam caused a corresponding dissention movement that had a great influence on the political and cultural atmosphere within the United States. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
