2 Books on the Spanish Armada
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page book review that contrasts and compares 2 texts. Colin Martin and Geoffrey Parker in their text The Spanish Armada, which was published in 1999, and Garrett Mattingly in The Armada, which was first published in 1959, address the subject of the English defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Mattingly's text, which has since become a classic text in the historiography of the Armada, proposes that the previous scholarship overlooked the significance of competing worldviews in this landmark conflict. Mattingly feels that the struggle between England and Spain was not simply over who would rule the seas and the economic interests of the New World, but also that it was a battle of ideologies. While Martin and Parker largely support this interpretation and expand on it, they also address the significance of the economic factors referred to by Mattingly and add to this body of knowledge through their comprehensive research. A Comparison of Brigden’s “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” and the Movie “Elizabeth”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page comparison of Susan Brigden’s text “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” and the film “Elizabeth”. Susan Brigden’s text “New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors 1485-1603” gives a broad historical account of the Tudor era in England during its almost 120 year rule throughout the 15th to early 17th centuries. Brigden’s background knowledge on the Reformation in England at that time is effective but perhaps not properly displayed in her text as much of the religious and political detail was excluded in lieu of the inclusion of selections of poetry and prose from the era to provide the book with more depth and color. Overall, the effect was not well received by the critics who craved more historical detail. The film “Elizabeth” directed by Shekhar Kapur, on the other hand, provides a more in depth look at the political but somewhat more personal details of Elizabeth’s reign from 1558 until her death and the end of the Tudors in 1603. The images portrayed in the film show the often gritty side of the religious fervor which shook Tudor England outside of the political elite emphasized in Brigden’s book. Audiences must be aware however that artistic license may be more in effect in “Elizabeth” however than within Brigden’s historical text but taken together “New Worlds, Lost Worlds” provides a good background for the reign of Elizabeth brought to life in the film “Elizabeth”.

A Study of Five Terrorist Groups: The Action Directe, the North Korean Communist Group, the Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba, the Dashmesh Regiment, and the Red Army Fraction/Baader Meinhof Group
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 30 page paper studying five terrorist groups: their history, ideology, acts of terrorism and current status. The study of five terrorist groups, the Action Directe (AD), the North Korean Communist Group, the Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT), the Dashmesh Regiment, and the Red Army Fraction (RAF) shows the extent extremists will go to further their causes in both the domestic and international arena. The Action Directe (AD) in France and the Red Army Fraction (RAF) in Germany were mostly active in the 1970s and 1980s when many of their leading members were imprisoned. Although not directly linked with any recent terrorist actions, the members of the AD and RAF are still actively associated with radical or political groups today. The North Korean Communist Group is considered one of the most viable terrorist threats of today as they are large, well-funded, still torture political prisoners and are believed to still manufacture nuclear, chemical and biological weaponry contrary to international agreements. The Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT) as the student based affiliated of the political party Jamiat-i-Islami (JI) in Pakistan wish for the education of Islamic youth and for the formation of an Islamic state free of all Western deviant and capitalist influences and continue violent protests to promote this ideal. The recent war on terrorism against the Taliban in Afghanistan has led the IJT to believe that the increase in martyrs for their cause will only increase their recruitment for their group. Finally, the Dashmesh Regiment or 10th Regiment in Pakistan and India wish for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan which is currently on land in India. They have formed alliances with other national and international terrorist groups with the intent of getting their cause well known and have been responsible for several international acts of terrorism. Although their group was diminished when the Indian forces captured many of their leaders, international Sikh supported organizations have been formed in their place to continue their cause. Bibliography lists 18 sources.
