Ethnocentrism/Mexican-American Experience
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that examines 2 texts and their historical perspective on Mexican American experience. Ethnocentrism is defined as the tendency to evaluate all other groups of people according to the values, standards and cultural traditions of one's own group. In other words, ethnocentrism connotes the idea that the way a particular society acts, believes, worships, and lives is the one "right" way and all others are perceived as "pagan," "primitive," or simply "wrong." Racism and bigotry find their roots in ethnocentrism and while racism is acknowledged in contemporary Western society as wrong, the roots of ethnocentrism are much harder to eradicate. This is shown by the scholarship of Rodolfo Acuna and Miguel Leon-Portillo and their accounts of classical indigenous and early mesoamerican history. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Evaluating Three Web Sites Concerning The Executive Branch, War And The Federalist Papers
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Tracing this country's political roots provides one the opportunity to better understand how certain governmental branches hold significantly more authority over others when it comes to issues of war and power. Two hundred twenty-five years ago, when the Constitution of the United States was created, the concept of war was just as prevalent as it is today. Distribution of power was of great concern for the founding fathers, many of whom were divided over constitutional ratification and what the Federalist Papers represented. The historic importance of such issues is explicitly documented in Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, which stands as the conduit between struggles of early America and how the country stands today. Evaluating three separate Web sites allows the student to more fully understand how intertwined these issues truly are. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

F.J. Gavin/Gold, Dollars and Power
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page book review. Francis J. Gavin, who teaches at the Lyndon B. Johnson School at the University of Texas, has written an intriguing assessment of post-World War II American international monetary policy (Gold, Dollars and Power, 2000). Specifically, Gavin addresses the era in which the Bretton Woods system was in ascendancy and he argues that, contrary to popular belief among historians and political scientists, the Bretton Woods system was "terminally ill" before Richard Nixon took office as president. Gavin points out that "It has long been an article of faith that the Bretton Woods regime was the most effective, stable international monetary system in modern history" (Gavin 9). However, his text takes exception with this position and argues that historians have basically misunderstood the Bretton Woods system in several significant ways. No additional sources cited.

Fascism, Nazism And World War II
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The appeal of Fascism in 1930s Germany can be primarily attributed to the appearance of much needed national support in the overwhelming presence of authoritarian principles. In 1939, the world collided with itself for the second time; in a show of sheer force, every major power on the planet -- known as the Allies and the Axis -- was in conflict with one another. At the crux of the Second World War was not so much the instigation of just one entity, but rather the combined efforts of two significant forces. Some believe that all the blame of WW2 belongs squarely upon the political shoulders of the Weimar Republic failure, while others contend that the combination of Germany's Fascist character, aims of the Kaisserreich and the rise of Hitler were instrumental in setting the stage for war. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
Filename: TLCfacsm.rtf

Fascism/Could It Happen in the US?
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page research paper that examines the nature of fascism and whether it could occur in the US. Since the 1930s and 40s, historical scholarship has wrestled with the problem of precisely how to define fascism, in both its Italian and German forms, and how to differentiate these forms from other totalitarian regimes, such as Stalinism. The lurking question behind all of such scholarship is whether or not fascism could emerge again on the world political stage. Looking at the common factors shared by the regimes of Hitler and Mussolini, as well as the features that they both share with Stalinism. There appears to be common ground in all of these authoritarian regimes that appeals to something basic in Western character and which, therefore, constitutes a danger to the concepts of democratic governance. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
