Elder Abuse

Most people are aware that there are laws that exist to protect children and animals from abuse. Many are not aware that there are laws that protect adults such as the elderly and disabled. Elderly Patients/Loss of Independence
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper that investigates this topic. While safety is a consideration for all patients, it is a particularly intense consideration in regards to when an elderly patient is hospitalized. Elderly patients who have previously been active can resist the loss of their independence and have trouble accepting a new reduced level of activity while hospitalized. Furthermore, an elderly patient may become confused in new surroundings and this may acerbate the tendency to wander or try to maintain their usual degree of independence. This can be inherently dangerous. An elderly patient who attempts to climb out of hospital bed with the bed rails raised can become entrapped and injured. Elements of Psychiatric Nursing Practice
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page research paper that draws on the nursing model of Hildegarde Peplau, as she is acknowledged to be one of nursing's leading theorists, as she was one of the first to emphasize the importance of the nurse/patient relationship. Peplau's model specifies three phrases in this relationship: orientation (meeting the patient, establishing a relationship), exploitation (the patient takes advantage of the nurse's expertise) and termination (discharge plan is initiated). When Peplau formulated her model of psychiatric nursing, Interpersonal Relations in Nursing, the routines of mental institutes tended to reinforce illness (Sills, 1999). Peplau taught nurses to nurture mental health, to conduct research and seek methods for interrupting the illness maintenance systems (Sills, 1999). This examination of psychiatric nursing practice looks briefly at research literature in order to demonstrate how Peplau's model remains applicable today. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Emergency Response Disaster Management
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper discussing issues surrounding emergency response as it relates to disaster management. The paper discusses emergency response resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, but it also discusses events such as Hurricane Fran in 1996, centering on the coast of North Carolina where the category 3 storm made landfall. The key to effective emergency response - excluding the training that can be seen as being a constant value – lies in the quality of communication between diverse teams and agencies responding to the event that has generated a crisis. The purpose here is to address two primary questions: “Are emergency responders equipped to communicate with others outside of their departments in time of crisis? [and] What are strategies to improve communications?” The paper concludes that emergency response in urban areas is highly effective, but that the same efforts in rural areas can be hindered by communication deficiencies.
