(6 pp) The most recent world issue (4/10/01)
concerning this most sensitive subject is from
April 10 of this year (2001), when The Hague in

The seventy-five seat chamber of government, with
one absence, voted 46 in favor and 28 opposed to
the legislation, making it the first nation in the
world to legalize euthanasia. But whether it is
legal in one country or the world, the basic
question still remains, "should" doctors intervene
at the end of life? The word euthanasia
according to the standard Webster is really made
up of three words: gentle, easy, and death.

Hans Jonas’ Restructuring of Kant’s Ethical Categorical Imperative in the Age of Technology
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Jonas’ restructuring of Kant’s categorical imperative in regards to ethically responsible decisions and actions. In the 18th and 19th centuries, philosophers such as Immanual Kant were interested in “the supreme moral principle” which would govern individual action and decision making in society, religion and politics. Kant in his work “Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals” developed the categorical imperative which stated “Act so that you can will that the maxim of your action be made the principle of universal law”. This reasoning reflected that individuals “ought” to act in relation to their moral duty and not out of self interest for the good of humanity and society. Since the advent of modern global technology however, contemporary philosophers argue that this categorical imperative falls short of preserving humanity. Hans Jonas in particular argues that Kant’s categorical imperative does not reflect the responsibility needed in present actions in order to preserve not only present generations but also future generations. Technology has such a global impact on all of humanity and the environment that decisions made today must have an imperative of responsibility for the future of humanity.

Hobbes, Aquinas And Plato: The Role Of Morality In
Establishing An Obligation To Obey Law
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Ever since the time when mankind
required the inclusion of law as a means by which to settle disputes and create a more agreeable community, the issue of legal infiltration has been the subject of myriad dissatisfied individuals who believe that the implementation of law has been significantly more detrimental than beneficial. Others, however, contend that without the presence of law, human morality would not stand on its own
as a deterrent to crime and otherwise unwanted social behavior. Thomas Hobbes, St. Thomas Aquinas and Plato postulated the issues surrounding the role of morality in establishing an obligation to obey law; from these three men, one can readily surmise that law most certainly has a place within society's civil framework.
