Indira Gandhi And The Emergency
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. The Emergency can be seen as a milestone of continuing negotiation between 'traditional' Indian ideas/institutions and the modern progressive ideals embraced by the Congress Party that remain alien to most of the Indian population. Analyzing the fundamental basis behind the Emergency, one finds that modernity in India has always been laid on society from the top, with all power solely residing with the Congress and the Nehru family. However, no matter how much power is concentrated within the central government with all their Nehruian ideals, the fact remains how real power lies between that at the center and the extraordinary stratification throughout the rest of the country, which functioned upon an entirely different basis. Under Indira Gandhi, as well as that of her father, the central government's point of view has always maintained a sense of a nation being jeopardized by its various constituents; as such, the nation-state must be defended. Clearly, there exists the entrenched idea of how the Nehru family has long upheld a lock upon the progressive change in India and, thus, must play an essential role in the defense of this nation-state. Innovative Policies Initiated by Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 12 page paper discussing the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan and some of their innovative policies. Since the formation of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan in 1955 resulting from the unification of several small conservative parties, the LDP has managed to initiate several innovative economic and national policies which have allowed Japan to recover from its post World War II depressive economy. The LDP, although conservative in nature, has adapted many international political techniques, both conservative and socialist, to improve the economy in Japan to the extent that it is now one of the leading industrialized nations in the world. The LDP government’s policies have involved a great deal of cooperative measures which allow for the support of large industries, small businesses, farming and support of a welfare system. In all cases, the government’s role has been to aid and support the increased economy in Japan and spurring the nation into total employment. In times of decreased support of the agricultural and small business industries in other countries in the West, Japan increased their support of farmers and small business which resulted in growth and prosperity in both cases. The LDP has also responded to political and popular pressure in regards to welfare and now has a health care program that is higher than most others in the world. This flexible conservatism is no doubt what is the secret of the success of the LDP and also the success of Japan’s recovery and solid economic standing on the world stage.

Internet Censorship In China: Past And Present
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The extent to which Internet censorship has become a requisite part of the entire World Wide Web experience is clearly indicative of the manner by which society's offensive element has found a way to reach its vulnerable audience. That pornography has been cited as the primary search objective on the Internet today speaks to the fact that children and adolescents are among the tremendous number of virtual onlookers visiting these sites every day. China is no stranger to this occurrence, inasmuch as Asian pornography is one of the worlds most popular and sought after commodities. Efforts to censor this decidedly harmful social element have been both significant and laborious; it sometimes seems as though the pornographic Web masters know all the tricks to bypass sophisticated obstacles. J.G. Ballard's "Empire Of The Sun": Jim's Metamorphosis
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Interpretive literature encompasses myriad existential elements that directly relate to character development; indeed, it is not merely a compilation of dates and events, but rather it is an exploration of humanity's spiritual side sometimes gone awry. Such is the case with J.G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun, inasmuch as this literary masterpiece shares the common denominator of achieving self-awareness and wholeness so prevalent in war stories. The very process of living life and expanding one's existence has often been perceived as a rebirth of sorts, with Ballard taking the concept to an infinitely high level of appreciation with Jim, his primary character. By embracing this inherent – and often esoteric – power, the reader is able to grasp a significantly better understanding of Jim's developing self-awareness and wholeness. No additional sources cited.
