Architectural and Spatial Comparisons Found in Rietveld’s “Schroder House”, Katsura Palace, and the Work of Mondrian
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing spatial design used by Rietveld, Mondrian and Kobori Enshu. Architect, artist and designer Gerrit Rietveld was part of an art movement in the Netherlands in the 1920s called “De Stijl” (The Style). One of the movement’s co-founders was artist Piet Mondrian, also from the Netherlands, whose work such as “Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue” emphasized the use of universalism, geometric forms and primary colors in addition to black and white in the creation of space. While Mondrian was primarily concerned with how his two-dimensional paintings could expand to include the interior environment which surrounded them within a room, Rietveld took the ideas proposed by the De Stijl movement into the architectural designs of homes. One of the best examples of Rietveld’s designs is found in Schroder House (1924) in Utrecht in which the use of creating space using geometric shapes, planes, primary colors and movement of walls is applied. Rietveld allows for the light from the outside to come into the house adding to the creation of space through the play of light on the walls and floors which have minimal decoration and are sparsely furnished to allow for an expansive creative space. The idea of universalism and geometric space to allow for the creation of space is not unique in architectural design and can be found as far back as the 1600s in Kobori Enshu’s design of the Katsura Palace in Kyoto which applied the creation of space with the tatami module design also using moveable walls and walls which opened to the environment for flexibility in space. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Architecture and Design for People
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the impact that architects and landscape architects could have in urban areas if planning and zoning laws would support creativity. One of the problems facing American cities and towns of all sizes is that of sprawl. It is seen as a natural evolution process of cities, but closer inspection reveals that it likely is not as “natural” as planners and designers would like to believe. As cities and towns across the country seek to revitalize downtown ghost towns or determine to be proactive as downtown buildings begin to become vacant, it is valid to assess whether the pattern is inevitable or whether planning and design share responsibility. Architecture Theory And Criticism: Recent Trends And Developments
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing the definition of 'modern' and relating architecture to social theory. Works by Marshall Berman, Kate Nesbitt, Diane Ghirardo, Thomas Dutton and Hussan Fathy are discussed. Despite raising the ire of architectural purists, these authors, over the objections of those not sharing their populist views and preferring to keep architecture in the realm of art and elitism rather than that of practical usefulness and a means of enhancing the quality of life for much of the world's population, understand that they are taking highly unpopular views with both conservatives and purists. Art & Beauty's Role in Knowledge
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining whether art can provide knowledge, or whether that knowledge instead is resident within the individual but unrealized until the experience of the art reveals it. Whether the individual is able to either recognize or access that knowledge is immaterial. When art can bring forth an understanding, it is not providing knowledge per se, but rather providing a framework in which that knowledge can be contained and translated to the conscious mind of its viewer. It is within this context that the work of Warhol becomes important, and Picasso's Weeping Women series portrays not only the image of pain, but also conveys an understanding of it. Art and Visual Culture
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page research paper/essay that discusses the relationship of art to visual culture. Visual culture refers to the context of an object and the features of that object that give it an understood meaning within a particular society. For example, "a heap of garbage" that is arranged by an artist in a particular manner and displayed within a museum can be classified as "fine art," but random garbage on the street is not considered to be an "important reflection of human intention" (Freedman 38). In other words, the context within a specific society and the ways in which an artist or a craftsman uses the elements of design, that is, line, space, scale, proportion, mass, shape, value, texture and color, convey meanings that are readily understood by the public based upon their cultural knowledge.
