Once We Were Warriors/Postcolonial Theory
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper/essay that analyzes the 1994 film “Once Were Warriors” offers an international audience a representation of Maori ethnic identity. When viewed in the light of postcolonial theory, the question that such an investigation immediately raises is whether or not the film offers an accurate vision of urban Maori society or if this film is itself a product of a postcolonial mindset. While certainly the domestic difficulties encountered by the film’s protagonists mirror the social disorder that plagues the Maori minority population of New Zealand, an examination of literature indicates that this question is complex and that an ethnic people cannot and should not facilely characterized as fitting so neatly into European-influenced stereotypes. Particularly in regards to how the film pictures Maori men. In order to argue this point, it is necessary to first look at the content of the film, then the basic arguments of postcolonial theory Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Poverty in America

This 25 page report discusses poverty in America and its impact on quite nearly every problem in America - crime, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, AIDS, spouse abuse, malnutrition, school drop-out rates and more. Since the 1960s and 1970s, policymakers have fiercely debated the appropriate role of government in providing solutions to these problems. Progress and Civilization
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page opinion paper answering the question, “Does progress make civilizations more civilized?” The paper discusses the civilization of the ancient Greeks and Aristotle’s belief that the highest form of existence is in leading the contemplative life. It compares the Greeks some of their neighbors, and discusses the advanced civilization of the native tribes of North America. The September 11 terrorist attacks, drive-by shootings and the discovery of hundreds of unburied bodies at a crematorium are far less civilized than pre-colonization Cherokee death rituals. Progress brought the ability to live with less personal responsibility for one’s own actions. The paper concludes that we absolutely are no more civilized as a result of the technological progress we have made. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
